FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

The program

What ages is this for?

The program is designed for students ages 11 to 14, specifically the transition from middle school to high school. It works best for students heading into or just starting 9th grade, but students in 7th through 10th grade benefit from the skills it teaches.

Does this work for kids with ADHD?

Yes. The program was designed with neurodiverse learners in mind. Every strategy is built to work without relying on willpower, sustained motivation, or consistent self-monitoring. The daily structure is short (20 to 30 minutes), each session is self-contained, and the systems are designed to function on bad days, not just good ones.

Can my student do it independently?

The student book is written directly to the student and designed to be used independently. Most students ages 12 and up can work through it on their own. The Companion is for parents and educators who want visibility into what the student is building and guidance on when and how to support.

How long does each day take?

Twenty to thirty minutes. Each day has one lesson and one hands-on exercise. The program is designed to fit into a normal school schedule without adding hours of extra work.

Is this a workbook?

No. Exercises are embedded within the chapters, but this is not a fill-in-the-blank workbook. Each day teaches a concept, then walks the student through building a specific system. They are building their own tools, not completing assignments.

What does "executive function" mean?

Executive function is the set of mental skills that let a person plan, start, track, and follow through on tasks. It includes things like time management, organization, prioritization, and self-regulation. These skills develop on their own timeline and are rarely taught explicitly, even though high school tests them from day one.

What makes this different from other study skills books?

Most study skills resources offer tips in no particular order, assume the reader is already motivated, and are written for adults to interpret. The Field Guide is a structured 8-week program written directly to the student, grounded in cognitive science, and designed to build systems that work even when motivation is low.

The two books

Do I need the Companion?

The student book works on its own. The Companion makes the adults around the program more effective. It explains the cognitive science behind each week, provides specific language for common friction points, and helps you know when to step in and when to stay out of the way.

When do the books launch?

Both books launched July 11, 2026. Field Guide to High School and the Adult Companion are available now in paperback and Kindle ebook on Amazon.

What formats are available?

The student book is available in paperback and ebook. The Companion is available in paperback and ebook.

Buying

Where can I buy the books?
